We Feed the World

An eye-opener as to what corporations are doing Privatizing public water for commodification, draining underground water sources faster than they can recharge, manipulating plant DNA and "patenting food," CAFOs and the absolutely inhumane treatment of animals.... There are many good DVDs on these topics, and this is one of the better ones. Not just addressing the issues, but naming names, graphic representation of tremendous waste, and out-there discussion on how these practices are affecting us, how these practices affect our environment, which then affects us...the vicious cycle. It all comes down to money. Bigger profits for the greedy corporation who exploit people, the environment, loopholes in the law, and how they are able to influence those in power--as well as disregarding and overturning legal policy in seemingly overnight maneuvers--for their own selfish gains. I have watched many DVDs on the issues of food and water. The best ones seem to be coming from outs...

Tattooed Flower Vase (1976) (Sub)

Image
A subtle tale A daughter, of young working age, returns to her mother's house. They bathe each other, naked. A moment of jealousy leads to a surprising response. This is in reaction to the daughter wishing that they could live together forever. "No! All women should marry." The mother makes dolls. A supplier wants to order 300 a month. He also wants her and tries. He is lecherous. A young man injures the daughter in a minor car accident. He brings the daughter home, meets and is impressed by the mother. The daughter competes for him with her wiles and succeeds. Later, he seduces the mother with gentleness. More interesting things follow. This includes the mother's passionate masturbation while her new suitor is begged by the daughter to perform again. He does. Then comes the tattoo; a significant memory from her earlier years. The tattooing is painful; excruciating at times, given some parts of the body involved. It's as if her endurance of pain has something to ...

Jan Svankmajer: The Ossuary and Other Tales

Image
Milos Forman once offered, "Disney + Buñuel = Svankmajer." Jan Svankmajer's new DVD "The Ossuary and Other Tales" is out. It contains some of his less known and underrated masterpieces: "The Last Trick" - Two magicians try to outdo each other in performing magic tricks, where the last trick would be disappearance of both. As in "Dimensions of Dialogue", "The Last Trick" explores inability to communicate and impossibility of dialogue and understanding. 1964/color/11:30 mins "Historia Naturae" - mesmerizing parade of myriads of images composed of eight sections, each devoted to a different category of creature. These are: Aquatilia, Hexapoda, Pisces, Reptilia, Aves, Mammalia, Simiae and Homo 1967, color, 9 mins "Johann Sebastian Bach" - great combination of music and images 1965, black & white, 9:30 mins "Don Juan" 1970/color/31 mins Based on The Don Juan story, Svankmajer made this 30 minutes long f...

The Book of the Dead (Kihachiro Kawamoto)

Image
Superbly Crafted Buddhist Fable Although we are all familiar with three dimensional animation, either in the stop-motion style of Tim Burton or the computer designed efforts of Pixar, Kihachiro Kawamoto's films are unique. He combines original puppets, Noh masks, traditional Japanese flute/ string melodies, natural sounds, lovely textiles, and Asian watercolor paintings to tell his stories. Altogether, it is a richly visual experience. This movie is the tale of Japanese noble lady who leaves her home in search of a spiritual vision whereas that same vision is in search of an earthly experience. To see this film is to be immersed in Japanese textures and rhythms. Lovely, sensual, and exotic...and highly recommended. disappointed about the narration A wonderful production, I have no complain about that. However, my disappointment came from the narration part. The original one was done by late great Kyoko Kishida, who was the actress did "Woman in the Dune", and her myst...

Seventeen Years

Image
Simply, Excellent! This is an excellent film. I loved the ending. Somehow, I love prison films. The protagonist being a heroine made the film more versatile and more emotional. Arguably, the film breaks-off from the moment Tao Lan hits her sister with the stick, thereby confirming a murder and hence sentencing her self to imprisonment for 17 years. The expression of guilt and anxiety that Tao Lan experiences affects till the end of the movie. The scene where Tao Lan returns home to see her family for the new years day (with the help of the officer) was absolutely stunning. The feeling of regret, depression, forgiveness and this sense of "Can't I still be a human? Cant I still live?" is profoundly what attracted me. Further, the tension and the contradiction, and above all, the indicisiveness between forgiveness and hate is played out by her father. The visual effects were also brilliant in that it assisted the film to give this very effect (the father getting old, moving...

Kirikou And The Wild Beast

Image
Glowing Animation of an African Fable One of the most interesting animated tales I have ever seen on DVD is "Kirikou and the Sorceress" - an unqualified 5 out of 5. That film tells the story of a tiny boy born with magical powers and canny intelligence who defeats a witch in the forest who is capturing the male warriors of a Senegalese village tribe. The next movie "Kirikou and the Wild Beast" is a sequel and like most sequels it never quite matches the originality of the earlier film. In fact, the magical birth of Kirikou is never explained or referred to. What is the purpose of the next film? It is a collection of short tales of Kirikou's adventures - such as riding a giraffe, outsmarting a powerful hyena, or creating lovely and valuable pottery for the village trading post. Nevertheless - the new film exceeds the original in one department - glorious animation design. Unbelievable. The artwork is equal to the best animation anywhere - computer or otherwis...
